On Wednesday April 7th, Baltasar Garzon, a Spanish judge, was charged with knowingly acting without jurisdiction for daring to investigate Spain's largest,unresolved issue: atrocities committed after its Civil War. Garzon was once praised as a hero for going after Osama Bin Laden and Augusto Pinochet. Now he could be removed from the bench for 10 to 20 years. He will not face jail time. He will most likely be suspended from his position on the National Court in a few days and his trial is expected to begin as early as June. In 2008, he launched a probe of tens of thousands of executions and dissappearences of civilians covered by a 1977 amnesty. He is considered an egotistic headline lover who involves himself in many Spanish controversies to some, while to others, such as those involved in human rights groups, he is still a hero. Garzon has made no immediate, public comment.
